Sometimes in life, you just find a place that you ‘know’ is right for you. This was how I felt when I walked into the newsroom at the Sun News. There was an Ohio State flag hanging over the copy desk b/c two of the deskers went to Ohio State. It was like coming home.

Here at the Sun News, I have met many lifelong friends. People who I immediately clicked with and who just seemed to fit. I loved many of the people I worked with here, but it was also a paper with many young people and eventually, in this business, you move on. Eventually, too many of my friends had left, which was sad, but I still loved Myrtle Beach.

I did a majority of my growing as a designer and a journalist here at the Sun News. I went from being a copy editor, to being a full-fledged designer and hoped to eventually move into management there. But in 1994, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and my whole life changed. I decided I didn’t want to be that far away from her while she was going through treatment, so I quit my job and moved home to take care of her. It was the best decision I think I’ve ever made in my life. I had time with her that I cherish to this day, although as time goes on, I feel like those memories fade.

Nevertheless, during those years at the Sun News, I got to design Golf tab covers, I got to work on a redesign and head up a committee to redesign the TVBook, I won some state design awards, I got to head up a newsroom committee to hire the Night Managing Editor and submitted a report on the committee findings, I was named employee of the month twice and employee of the quarter once. I feel like I accomplished a lot during this time.
